Transferable sensor

Mind Pad 2 is supplied with a leather wallet that is designed to fit around a very thin sensor. This sensor may be removed, enabling you to turn any ordinary pad of paper, journal, wallet or table into a wireless impression device. The powerful inductive coils in the sensor and pen allow it to be placed under 350 sheets of paper or 1cm of wooden tabletop, and still accurately track the motion of the pen.

A proprietary vinyl wrap system protects delicate components from damage while keeping the sensor to an ultra thin 3mm in height.

The above image shows the Mind Pad 2 sensor embedded in a Moleskine jotter. The pen will write ‘through’ the entire jotter.

Improved design

With a higher capacity battery an d a powerful Class 1 Bluetooth transmitter the Mind Pad 2 features an extended range of more than 50 feet while keeping the same 8+ hours of battery life . The rigidity of the board has also been enhanced, resulting in a durable yet ultra-thin sensor that will last a lifetime of regular use.

Powerful software

The Mind Pad software may be installed on any device that uses the Android operating system. This includes phones, tablets, PDAs and some MP3 players. In fact, the app will run on any device that has a Bluetooth connection and runs Android 2.1+

We don’t supply a phone, tablet or media player with the Mind Pad. This gives you the freedom to choose a suitable device or use your existing phone. As we improve the software and add new features we can update your software remotely.

Advanced feature set

Faster and more intuitive, almost every aspect of the Mind Pad software was been extended and improved.

In Slideshow mode the app will store an unlimited number of drawings. No need to decide in advance how many you would like to record – the software will keep adding them to the end of the slideshow.

The Autoscale feature has also changed. Fluid zoom now autoscales the image to fit the screen in real time.

In Vibration mode you can add various hot areas to the pad, with each hot area vibrating a set number of times when it detects pen movement. Mind Pad 2 now enables you to add an unlimited number of hot areas to your pad.

And finally, the newest addition to the feature set, Handwriting Recognition

This incredibly exciting new feature recognises words and drawings, sending them to a hidden earpiece via Text to Speech or directly via Morse Code Vibration.

Every aspect of the application is customisable, from the width of the lines right down to the number of seconds between each image in the slideshow.

Unlimited effects

There’s no limit to the number of effects that can be performed with the Mind Pad. It can be use for pre-show, or form the basis for an entire performance. The DVD includes a number of routines conceived by Marc Paul for the Mind Pad 1.

Hugo Shelley owns and operates a prototyping and design studio in London. He has a background in physics and philosophy and has worked on a variety of projects, including wireless medical sensors and miniature robots that teach children how to code.

• How do Mind Pad 1 and 2 differ?
  • Rather than shipping with a dedicated receiver, Mind Pad 2 now transmits to any Android-powered phone, tablet or MP3 player. This allows us to create features that we could have only dreamt of before, at a reduced price.

Wireless earpieces, Android cellphones, tablets or MP3 players are not included. You are free to choose from the variety of commercially available devices.

• Do you recommend a specific type of phone/tablet?
  • Mind Pad 2 should work with any device running Android 2.1 and up. However, speed and memory varies and a slower, older device will not perform as well as a recent model. We currently recommend using the Galaxy S2.
• Does the Mind Pad 2 work with an iPhone?
  • No, the software will only run on the open-source Android OS. Apple’s restrictions make it impossible to implement either a Bluetooth connection or text-to-speech.

Android is currently the world’s most popular mobile operating system. Only on Android can you find OLED screens, 10” tablets and miniature phones. The range of different devices results in a far more versatile setup than if the software were written for the iPhone.

• Will you ever create an iPhone version?
  • Anything is possible and we’re not ruling it out. However if we did we wouldn’t necessarily be able to offer the same features.
• Do I have to buy a contract phone?
  • Not at all. Handsets can be bought from stores without a contract or on Ebay. Tablets, of course, do not require a contract.
• How do you know if the battery is running low?
  • There are battery indicators on the main screen of the app that will let you know the sensor is running low on power. The sensor can be recharged from a standard USB port.
• Does the Mind Pad 2 fit in your pocket?
  • Yes. The wallet is designed to fit an outer suit jacket pocket.
• Does the pen need batteries?
  • No, the circuitry in the pen is powered by inductive coupling and does not need batteries.
• What happens when I run out of paper?
  • The paper is a standard A6 refill pad, available from Rymans in the UK and many other stationers worldwide.
• What happens when I run out of ink?
  • We supply a spare ink cartridge with your pen. This will last you many months of continual use. Refills may be found online or purchased through MagicTricks.co.uk
• What happens if I lose the pen?
  • Replacement pens can be bought from MagicTricks.co.uk, subject to availability.
• Do you offer any other designs of pen?
  • 
    Yes, we have a new pen design that will become available in October 2011. The pen is functionally identical to the previous design, but slightly more natural looking, with a clip lid. It will be available to purchase separately from MagicTricks.co.uk
• What is the guarantee?
  • The unit is guaranteed from electronic malfunction for up to a year where the fault can be deemed a manufacturer fault.

The sensor will last for many years if you look after it well. However, any evidence of deliberate or accidental damage will void the warranty; this includes failure to follow our recommendations for care of the sensor, dropping it, bending it, spilling liquid on it or exposing to extremes of temperature or humidity. It is designed for professional use but like anything of this nature needs to be taken care of, with a good level of audience management. If this is a concern for you, please don’t buy this item.
